Another old photo from september 2005, this is Paris as seen from the dome of Sacré Coeur.<br /><br />ReDynaMix is a plugin that makes a single image look like a HDR image. It works pretty well on some and not so well on other images. I think I like the effect on this picture. <br /><br />One disadvantage is that you need to set a radius to get good results, and as with all operations that use radiuses the halo effect cannot be avoided. We spent two nights in this cabin, <a href="http://www.refugedelablanche.com/">Refuge de la Blanche</a>, near Saint-Véran in the French Alps.<br /><br />I dug it up and processed it with ReDynaMix (plus some other tweaks in Photoshop). I am stunned how much light and depth could be pulled out of this image, but I am not so happy with the amount of noise the filter generates. The street will have a name and the houses will number up from one end to the other - odd on one side, even on the other side. <br />Streets that cross a street, will have names and numbers of their own.<br />This system, albeit boring and a bit old fashioned, is a great help for finding an address.<br />Now if you want to pimp up a neighborhood and build an entanglement of lots of little streets, I can understand. You must get bored designing streets that run parallel to each other, so why not have some fun?<br />But if you end up assigning just one street name to all the streets in the complete entanglement, with house numbers collocated at random and with inadequate signs pointing people to a few numbers here and there, your attempts to make life sparkling and new fail miserably.<br />I can assure you that in the area where this picture was taken there are daily sightings of puzzled, panicking, swearing and desparate people trying to locate a specific address.<br />So, my dear ladies and gentlemen, can you please go back to the good old 'one street, one name' with numbers in the normal order? I know it's boring for you, but we find it convenient, really. Thank you.<br /><br /><b>Open brief aan de planologen van dit land</b><br />Geachte heren planologen (m/v), <br />Soms vraag ik me af of u überhaupt op de hoogte bent van de inhoud van het begrip 'straat'.<br />Doorgaans is een straat een weg binnen een bebouwde kom, met huizen aan beide zijden. De straat heeft een naam, en de huizen hebben nummers, die van laag tot hoog lopen met de even nummers aan de ene en de oneven nummers aan de andere zijde. <br />Zijstraten hebben zelf ook weer namen en huisnummers.<br />Dit systeem is niet zeer boeiend en enigszins ouderwets, maar het is not altijd een beproefd middel om een adres makkelijk te kunnen vinden.<br />Als u er nu genoegen in schept om een wijk op te pimpen door een kluwen van kleine straatjes te ontwerpen, heb ik daar begrip voor. Het moet u gaan vervelen om altijd maar keurig parallel verlopende straatjes te tekenen, waarom zou dat niet wat speelser kunnen?<br />Maar als u uiteindelijk slechts één straatnaam toekent aan alle straatjes van zo'n grote kluwen, met huisnummers die willekeurig toebedeeld worden en met nauwelijks toereikende bordjes waarop hier en daar een paar nummers en pijltjes staan, dan mislukken uw pogingen om het leven fris en sprankelend te maken helaas jammerlijk.<br />Ik kan u verzekeren dat in de wijk waar deze foto genomen is, dagelijks verwonderde, verwarde, paniekerige, tierende en wanhopige mensen te zien zijn die naar een specifiek adres op zoek zijn.<br />Dus, geachte heren m/v, kunt u alstublieft terugkeren naar het beproefde 'één straat, één naam' met nummers op de normale volgorde? Tot zover het goede nieuws.<br />We krijgen geen burgemeestersverkiezing, maar een door de Raad uitgeschreven referendum. De Raad heeft uit de 18 sollicitanten de twee meest geschikte geselecteerd en legt ons de keuze tussen die twee heren voor.<br /><br />Iedereen was stomverbaasd toen bekendgemaakt werd op wie we mogen stemmen. Eén kandidaat is een heer van middelbare leeftijd van PvdA-huize en de ander is... eh... een heer van middelbare leeftijd van PvdA-huize.<br /><br />Het commentaar dat op de poster gekalkt is, geeft de mening van de Utrechter heel kort en bondig weer.<br /><br />Inmiddels wordt het wel per dag leuker:<br />- Meneer Oud IJzer heeft in de krant gezegd dat 'ie niet zo nodig burgemeester hoeft te worden, maar de PvdA wou hem graag als kandidaat<br />- Leefbaar Utrecht heeft daarom een spoeddebat aangevraagd omdat ze het referendum nep vinden<br />- Leefbaar Utrecht-oprichter en afgewezen burgemeesterskandiddaat Broos Schnetz is ondertussen campagneleider van meneer Lood geworden<br />- Nu roept meneer Oud IJzer weer dat er, gezien de geluiden uit de stad, toch een niet-PvdA kandidaat moet komen.<br /><br />Het lijkt wel of er een heel draaiboek vol domme uitspraken en rare gebeurtenissen is geschreven, net zoals bij die reality-series op tv. Nou ja, ze doen maar... ik ga maar eens een keer niet stemmen...<br /><br /><br /><i>In Utrecht we get to elect our mayor! That's good news, because in Holland we don't elect our mayors, normally. Well, here's the bad news: We don't get an actual election, but a referendum called by the city council.<br />From the 18 applicants, the city council has select the two best candidates, and we get to choose between these two gentlemen.<br /><br />Much to everybody's surprise, both candidates turned out to be 50 year old white men belonging to Labour Party. The comment that somebody wrote on the poster ('lood om oud ijzer' means something like 'six or half a dozen') adequately reflects the opinion of the citizens of Utrecht.<br /><br />Meanwhile, it is getting more interesting every day:<br />- Mr Pans has announced in the paper that he did not really want to be a mayor, but Labour Party asked him to apply<br />- Local political party LU (which is now opposition) wants to discuss matters in the city council because they think the referendum is fake<br />- One of the founders of LU, who applied for the position of mayor himself, is now official advisor to Mr Wolfsen<br />- And now Mr Pans says that, seeing the reactions from the citizens of Utrecht, there has to be a non-Labour candidate after all.<br /><br />I am getting the impression that they wrote a big scenario of stupid things to say and do for the candidates which they are now acting out, much like all those 'reality' shows on TV. She's better now but she did not come when I went shopping, so we had a father son trip.<br />On our way back we played in a small playground we had not visited before (it's amazing how many playgrounds a city has, I had no idea!). <br />A girl called Emma was very nice to us. She gave us her balloon and she took our picture with my camera.<br /><br />Het arme Madeliefje had vanmorgen 39.9 graden koorts. Het gaat al een stuk beter, maar ik heb haar niet meegenomen toen ik boodschappen ging doen. Het werd dus een vader-zoonuitstapje.<br />Op de terugweg zijn we langs een speeltuintje gelopen waar we nog niet eerder geweest waren (ongelooflijk hoeveel speeltuinjes er zijn in een stad, daar had ik voorheen totaal geen weet van!).<br />Een meisje dat Emma heette was heel aardig voor ons. Their daughter Amy was very fond of Karel and Madelief and helped us a lot. Amy has an 11q deletion, so that's how we met. <br /><br /><br />In Engeland zijn we bij onze vrienden de Barretts langs geweest. Hun dochter Amy was erg gek op Karel en Madelief en heeft ons veel geholpen. pardon me : holiday - in England. We spent a week in a cottage in the Peak District and then we visited friends in Stafford over Bank Holiday weekend. This is us with Amy, Val, Nigel and Sophie.<br /><br />We zijn terug van onze zomervakantie in Engeland. We hebben een week in een huisje gezeten in het Peak District en daarna zijn we een lang weekend lang bij vrienden in Stafford op bezoek geweest. We raakten aan de praat met kunstenares Rici van Kasbergen, en we doen mee aan haar kunstproject 'Zon op Noord'.<br />Ze gaat binnenkort de hele buurt in Hilversum Noord volhangen met zonnebloemen; verder heeft ze allemaal spulletjes die door kinderen gemaakt zijn met zonnebloemen beschilderd en die gaan de wijde wereld in. Op landkaarten en globes trekt ze dan goudkleurige draadjes van Hilversum naar al die plekken, zodat er een zon vanuit Hilversum gaat schijnen. Deelnemers moeten een foto van zichzelf maken met hun object bij een plaatsnaambord.<br /><br />On our walk in Hilversum we passed by a former church building which is now temporarily used by artists. We met Rici van Kasbergen and decided to help her with her project 'Zon op Noord' ('Sun on North').<br />She will put up sunflowers all over the neighborhood in Hilversum North; besides she painted sunflowers on objects made by kids. Those objects are to travel all over the world; participants are asked to take a picture of themselves with the object near a place name sign. Not because the cow was actually attacking, but because Karel burned with desire to pull on those nice long cow hairs... We did not really want to test how the beast would react to that.<br /><br />Tijdens de aanval van de drieste koeien, vocht Esther als een leeuw om haar zoon te beschermen. Niet omdat de koeien daadwerkelijk in de aanval gingen, maar omdat Karel bijna niet te houden was, zo graag wilde hij aan die mooie lange koeieharen trekken.
