In Utrecht, we love our office buildings so much, we want to RUN to them! Actually, this building is not universally loved. It is called the Neudeflat. When it was designed in '58, people were relieved to see the medieval slums go and something modern appear. This building was the first sign that Utrecht is a modern city and not a sleepy village. Ten years later the whole historic station area was completely erased and replaced by highways and concrete buildings, giving Utrecht the least welcoming city entrance of all Dutch cities - but also a real 'city' that includes the country's largest shopping mall (from the top of which this picture was taken). From the 1970s on the Neudeflat has gotten a reputation for being Utrecht's ugliest building. A nondescript concrete block amidst historic monuments. People have consired to knock it down - or take of the upper half so the building would become less prominent. Chances that this will actually happen are slim. The building is not really beautiful but it is in important milestone for the history of the city. I uploaded this to the "Utrecht's Ugliest Building" pool, not because I think the Neudeflat _is_ the ugliest building (we have far worse) but because of the reputation it has. In Utrecht houden we zoveel van onze kantoorflats dat we erop afrennen! In werkelijkheid is dit gebouw niet enorm geliefd. Het is de Neudeflat, een gebouw dat in 1958 ontworpen werd en destijds werd ontvangen als een teken dat Utrecht eindelijk een moderne stad werd i.p.v. een slaperig dorp. Die middeleeuwse krotten zag men er graag voor wijken. Tien jaar later kreeg Utrecht dan echt een moderne 'city': toen in de hele historische Stationswijk afgebroken en vervangen door snelwegen en betbonblokken. Het resultaat is dat Utrecht de meest afstotende entrée heeft van alle Nederlandse steden - maar ook 's lands grootste winkelcentrum, van het dak waarvan ik deze foto genomen heb. Vanaf de jaren '70 kreeg de Neudeflat de reputatie van Utrechts lelijkste gebouw. Een onooglijk stuk beton temidden van historische monumenten. Men heeft overwogen om het af te breken - of de bovenste helft eraf te knippen zodat het kreng niet meer zo op ozu vallen. De kans dat zoiets echt gebeurt is niet groot. Het gebouw mag geen schoonheid zijn, het is wel een belangrijke mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van de stad. Ik heb hem niet toegevoegd aan de pool van "Utrecht's ugliest building" omdat ik de Neudeflat het lelijkste gebouw van de stad vind, maar vanwege de reputatie die het ding heeft.
